To Black Girls
Black Girls
Be Unafraid to be completely who you are
Wear your hair wild and free
speak words of consciousness
sing out loud
speak the truth
Yell to the top of your lungs
so you know they hear you
wear your ornaments of not just gold and silver
but handmande too of yarn and twine
of found things
make something out of things left behind
dress how you feel
mix hues of reds and blues
burn down images of stars and stripes and stereotypes
chant the chours of one love
teach them to emancipate themselves from mental slavery
sing along you know the words
don’t just speak them
believe them
be them
be the force
the voice of the people
the prophet that cannot be shot down
stand strong let your wings fly
to the rhythm of your soul
pierce your skin
ink your bodies
stand for something
be down for the cause
tune in but do not cop out
the revolution will not be televised
it will be live
but only if you are wise enough to notice
black girls open your mind
pay attention
spread your wings and
be free
On Being A Woman
Sometimes being a woman means saying no
And dressing how u feel
wearing camouflage cargo pants and high heels
Frilly dresses and chuck Taylor's
Explaining why we can't wear white
Carrying entire universes inside our bodiesPreparing our young souls to be mothersSit still, be neat, cry if you must because that's what girls do
It's not enough to simply be us
We carry the entire gender on our backs
Emotional and bitchy
Black and late
We carry everything
Insecurities
Bubble gum
Heart ache
Lip gloss
Memories
Abuse
Hurt loss
Pain joy And weaponry And still we're considered the weakest link? How can that be? As we have to stroke your egos
Being a woman means fighting for who You are Through heartbreaks Name calling Unanswered phone calls Because that's all we've got Because being a woman means Resilience is key to survival
Pain joy And weaponry And still we're considered the weakest link? How can that be? As we have to stroke your egos
beause its easier that way
Continue to oppress us with you magic wand
Zap! Begone equality!
Welcome to submissionBeing a woman means fighting for who You are Through heartbreaks Name calling Unanswered phone calls Because that's all we've got Because being a woman means Resilience is key to survival
With no pat on our back or gold
And your very survival and recreation of futher generations is completely
Depended on everyday sheroes
with
Just the arch in our brow and paint on our nails
Sometimes being a woman means saving us for ourselves
